The infamous ‘daverunner’ is back, and this time for those collectors who need some Highs on their shelf. Bold and unexpected colorways are the name of the game for the daverunner and this one is no exception. Aglet continues to build its inventory of heat, so be on the lookout for more from Aglet. Dave and Dan retreated to a Fransiscan monestary to contemplate the meaning of sneakers and the universe, arriving at the conclusion that every sneaker should have exactly 42 components. Out of that monastic retreat emerged this sneaker, engineered to perfection. Dave reached a state of enlightenment on the retreat, levitating 2x. Hence, we went with a “high”. A must-have for the collection! Get’em while you can.

Well, where do we start? 12 months since the original DAVERUNNER launched, and the hype hasn’t stopped. The original remains one of the most sought after shoes in the game. The numbered ones are hyper-rare, especially in Deadstock condition, and if you have one, you’re one of the lucky few. So how do we even begin trying to improve on the original? Well, to start with, we added a little bit of Travis-inspired paisley into the mix. And then we added more flannelette, because as any true bogan knows, you just can’t have too much flannelette. Will these top the originals? Only time will tell. But if I were a betting man, I’d be betting on these becoming another Aglet icon shoe.

In April 2020 I started working at Onlife, which had at that time just released a mobile phone game called Aglet. The game was a map based game similar to Pokemon Go, where players would navigate to locations around them and collect in game assets such as sneakers and street wear.

Initially I was employed as a casual, just helping out a friend who was one of the co-founders of the company. We were in business together with the real estate business, and he knew I could do with a few extra dollars given that real estate was essentially shut down due to lockdowns. When I started there were just a handful of us. Things grew very quickly and the role was made full time. I was essentially handling all of the in-game support requests and engaging with the community on our Discord chat server.

The game revolved around sneakers and street wear culture. We were releasing a lot of very cool sneakers into the game, and players were loving the ability to collect their favourite sneakers, albeit digital versions of them, in a game that was fun to play. 

One of the “hype” brands was Adidas Yeezy’s. Designed by Ye, these shoes were as much a hit inside the game as they were in real life. One of the more popular Yeezy’s is the “Waverunner”, and so it wasn’t a big surprise that my colleagues gave me the nickname “Daverunner”, a play on my name and the popular Yeezy shoe. 

So in all my engagements with our players, they knew me as Daverunner. So it made sense (to me at least) that I begin agitating for us to release a Daverunner shoe inside the game. To that end, I began dropping subtle hints in team meetings, and also began stirring up our players, getting them onboard with the idea that releasing a Daverunner was a good idea.

Our Senior Illustrator, Dan, came up with an impressive design which incorporated numerous elements that were relevant to me, and in time the tide was too much for management to ignore, and the Daverunner was released into the game. 

At the time, the release of this digital shoe was the most successful of any we’d released to date, including shoes like Nike, Adidas, New Balance etc. For an “unknown” shoe, it gave us an insight into the fact that the “hype” around particular shoes wasn’t always just due to the shoe being popular in real life already, but that we could manufacture our own hype around a brand. 

Over the next few years, we successfully created and launched 16 “Daverunner” shoes, all with differing styles and colours, but all featuring the Daverunner name on the sole, and all backed by the hype we created around the brand. 

In addition, we released a further 12 shoes which featured “Dave” in one way or another. I had become a meme within a game.

For Dave, there is nothing better than the cozy comfort of a good flannel. That’s why he tasked our designers with creating a flannel-inspired version of his namesake Aglet One Daverunner. Dubbed ‘Flannel,’ this colorway features a black and gray upper that’s accented by blue plaid flannel overlays. The white midsole features Dave’s personalized Daverunner tag. Rounding out the look are Australian flag-themed laces and a signature Dave “Help” hang tag. Cop these kicks because everyone needs a good flannel in their collection.

Release Details

The release date was August 13 2022. There was a small batch of 100 released at a price of 304 Gold Aglet each (approximately $37.41AUD).

The ‘Banned Daverunner’ was originally created by Aglet in-house illustrator Dan soon after the initial release of the original Daverunner. The original was based on a Nike Dunk design, and featured a Nike ‘swoosh’ at the front of the shoe. It had Australian flag tongue and laces, and had a cigarette and smoke forming a second ‘swoosh’ shape. It also featured No7, a nod to the Jack Daniels label, partly obscuring the number 420. I have no idea what this reference is

The show was about to be released into the game, but a senior member of the management team finally saw the design just prior to the release, and banned it! The release didn’t go ahead, and so began a ‘movement’ to get a release for this very stylish design.

Many subsequent iterations of the design took place. It was moved off a Nike based design and onto an Aglet One base. This design looked like this.

Again, the content was deemed to be too ‘adult’ in nature. Finally, after many different discussions and disagreements, a version of the banned Daverunner was approved. Notably the final design still kept the 420 hidden under a modified No7 (now N7 to avoid any copyright issues). Here’s the final approved design, which was released on August 7, 2022

Sneaker Story

The Wizard of Drops and star of Dave’s Gallery has a bad boy reputation, well earned, of course. This NFT iteration of the Daverunner series celebrates the darker side of our Hero of Help and features hints at Dave’s banned passions. The upper of this Aglet One silhouette features black and grey panels and overlays with white stitching throughout. Aussie-themed Laces burning at the ends and a gum sole round out the look. Don’t be like Dave, but love him for who he is and cop these kicks before they get completely banned.
